Job in Light of Jesus and the New Covenant

There’s always those folks who love to bring up Job to support God causing His people to suffer bodily illness and deep personal loss in order somehow bring Him glory.

Now of course, staying strong in our faith through hardships DOES bring glory to God! But that does not in any way mean that God causes the hardships and sufferings. No that’s just a part of being IN this world.

And so the first problem with this view is that God never actually touched Job, the devil was the one who orchestrated Job’s suffering and loss. Then they say, “Yeah okay but God allowed it.” Which is true. But then we must ask, “Why God did allow it?

Well we actually find the answer in the text… Because Job opened the door to the devil through fear. Job gave Satan a legal right saying, “For what I have ALWAYS feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true.” (Job 3:25) Paul continues to warn us even today, “Do not give the devil a foothold.” (Ephesians 4:27)

Here’s the thing…. We should LEARN from Job, Paul says that, “…these things have been recorded for us to learn from.” (Romans 15:4) However we are not called to LIVE like Job; we’re called to live like Jesus.

We don’t even know if Job had a covenant with God. We however DO KNOW that WE have a covenant with God through Jesus Christ! And, “The covenant Jesus has received is superior to theirs as the covenant of which He is now mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.” (Hebrews 8:6)

A lot has changed since the days of Job. He was not born again, he never had “Christ IN HIM the hope of glory.” He did not have, “The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead” dwelling in him. (Romans 8:11) He did not possess the right as a child of God to use the name of Jesus. He was not given “Authority over ALL THE POWER of the enemy.” (Luke 10:19) And quite frankly…. the list of differences just keeps going!

So please Church, let’s put the “Yeah but what about Job?” argument to rest! We DON’T ignore his account. But we DO now view it through the New Covenant. In the Old concealed, in the New revealed!

By all means, LEARN from Job. But for your sake… LIVE like Jesus!

Isaiah 53:4 | “SURELY He took upon Himself our pain and bore our suffering…”

1 Peter 2:24 | “By His wounds you HAVE BEEN healed.”
